Developing and Transitioning Leaders

In the last issue of Fingertip Resources we reported the results of our study of the change-related challenges facing consultants and trainers. One of the challenges identified is "Developing and Transitioning Leadership." Examples from this category include succession planning, cancellation of needed training and coaching, transitioning of new leaders, retirement and unexpected changes in leadership. We found that not only is leadership changing hands more often but leaders of organizations are being asked to perform more effectively and efficiently than ever before. It seems there has never been a more important time for effective leadership development than now. This is supported by a report from Freemont Learning that indicates over 70% of companies are maintaining or increasing budgets for front-line and new managers in 2009. However, 43% of these companies are decreasing their budgets for the development of more senior managers.
