Here's the Discovery
- Help groups discover they can negotiate change and thrive
- Help groups realize how to recreate themselves collectively with a new purpose.
- Reveal to participants the different perspectives at work within any group facing and navigating change.
- Help each individual understand more about how he or she sees situations differently from others.
- Help participants see how these differences can affect interactions within the group and the success of the group as a whole.
- Explore effective behaviors during the transition that follows a change.
This coordinated design combines an assessment
and a simulation.
Use Change Style Indicator (online beforehand or self-scoring in classroom) to determine the Change Style preference of each participant. If pre-work is an option, this can be completed in advance with formal reports you produce through Discovery Learning’s Online Assessment Center, Inc., to be distributed to participants at the appropriate time. An accompanying Style Guide identifies strengths and pitfalls of style characteristics.
Begin the Our Town simulation by dividing the participants into two groups at random. Assign the roles and conduct the simulation in which two community-based organizations must explore their missions and develop a five-year strategic plan. During the debrief of Our Town, explore the interactions within and between the groups in light of the Change Style preferences of participants. Explore how individuals transition through the Change Process Model. How did persons with different Change Style preferences participate before the merger announcement and afterwards? Present and discuss Change Styles in concert with the debrief. Explore with the group the Change Process Model explained in Dangerous Opportunity.
