Use Paper Planes, Inc. and Change Style Indicator.

Paper Planes, Inc. and Change Style Indicator

  • session is 5-7 hours
  • works well with 12 to 30 participants
  • pre-work is optional for scoring Change Style Indicator through the Online Assessment Center

Here's the Discovery

  • From among the many potential lessons from Paper Planes, Inc., help participants experience barriers to group learning.
  • Explore the negative effects of compartmentalized work, lack of common goals and vision, and missing feedback on team effectiveness.
  • Use Change Style Indicator in concert with Paper Planes, Inc. to offer participants an assessment of their personal style and to give them greater insight into how they interact with others of similar and different preferences and perspectives.
  • Show how the differences in Change Styles offer participants another possible explanation for the ease of interaction or the friction team members may experience.
  • Explain specific strategies for helping people of different Change Styles better understand each other and better cooperate as members of a team.
  • Explore how insight on Change Styles allows participants in Paper Planes, Inc. can move rapidly toward building an effective team.

This coordinated design combines an assessment and a simulation.

Paper Planes, Inc. is a rich simulation that sparks consideration of several important topics. Combine it with Change Style Indicator to emphasize issues related to the challenge of Change Management (See Training Design CM-1) or, in this case, Team Building.

Use Change Style Indicator (self-scoring) to determine the Change Style preference of each participant. (This can be completed in advance if pre-work is an option. Formal reports you produce through Discovery Learning’s Online Assessment Center, can be distributed to participants at the appropriate time.)

During the debrief, after the first production run of Paper Planes, Inc., the ineffectiveness of the group working together and their production inefficiency will be revealed. As preparation for undertaking a redesign of their work processes for Run #2, present information about Change Styles and have all participants reveal their personal Change Style preferences. Pursue discussion about the interactions among participants during and following Production Run # 1 in light of this new information about Change Styles. Discuss strategies for persons of different Change Styles to work together. Challenge participants in Run # 2 to create a new production process that the team believes will work more effectively and more efficiently.
